Programs

The following represent the main goals for 2011 subject to board approval:

  • Monitor the waters near the sewage treatment plants before the upgrade and after the upgrade. This will include the basic parameters of oxygen; salinity, temperature, and % DO saturation and also include fecal coliform testing. The parameter reading will be done with an YSI 556 and the bacteria will be tested with Millipore kits. Millipore testing equipment and field incubator provided by Project Oceanology. This does not include membranes or media.
  • High tide and low tide same day monitoring of Wequetequock Cove each month starting in May, 2011. Bottom samples will also be taken to determine biodiversity of the infauna (organisms living in the sediment).
  • Monitor all the coves and harbors of Stonington for aquatic health.
  • Work to reduce nitrogen overloading of our waters. We will continue with our successful “Maintain the Natural Bird Population” aimed at getting people to not feed the waterfowl as it creates an unnaturally large population in a small area.
